Planning notes
The OpenSearch project's maintenance policy says that when a new major version ships, the last minor version of the previous major enters a maintenance window. By default, a version stays under maintenance until the next major version enters maintenance, or one year passes, whichever is longer. Fixes are not back-ported to versions outside that window.
That makes the table above easy to read in practice: the supported versions are usually the current major and the previous major's last minor, plus any older major still inside its maintenance window. Anything outside those gets no new releases from the project.
Before a major upgrade, take a snapshot, check plugin and client compatibility, and read the project's release notes for breaking changes. OpenSearch Dashboards should move to a matching version at the same time.
