Planning notes
The Kubernetes project maintains release branches for the most recent three minor releases. Versions 1.19 and newer receive about one year of patch support; 1.18 and older received about nine months. After a branch reaches its end-of-life date, it no longer receives security updates or bug fixes.
Because a minor version lives for roughly a year and a new minor ships about every four months, a cluster that stays on one minor falls out of support within a year. Managed services such as EKS, AKS and GKE publish their own support windows, which can differ from the upstream dates in the table above, so check the provider as well.
Plan upgrades one minor version at a time, test add-ons and API deprecations in a non-production cluster first, and start the next upgrade well before your current minor's end-of-life date.
