Planning notes
Microsoft ships a new major .NET version every November. Even-numbered versions are Long Term Support (LTS) and get free support and patches for three years. Odd-numbered versions are Standard Term Support (STS) and get them for two years.
.NET 8 (LTS) and .NET 9 (STS) both reach the end of support on November 10, 2026. .NET 10 (LTS) is supported until November 14, 2028. A higher major number does not always mean a later support deadline: .NET 9 gives no more runway than .NET 8. Plan against the actual date, not the LTS or STS label alone.
Before choosing an upgrade, inventory the runtime used by each deployed application, not only the SDK on the developer machine. Check each project file and global.json, then review service hosts, container base images and build agents. An application with its own bundled runtime needs that runtime updated too; updating a shared runtime does not update every deployed application.
A supported major version still needs current patch updates. Use the vendor table to identify the latest patch in your chosen release, then test the application and its dependencies on that patch before deployment. Verify operating-system support separately: the .NET deadline does not extend support for the Windows or Linux host.
