Planning notes
containerd's release policy defines the state of each release branch: Active branches are stable and accepting patches, Extended branches accept security patches only, and LTS branches are long-term stable branches that keep accepting patches. New minor releases follow a fixed cadence of about every four months.
In practice, check which state your branch is in before you plan. A branch in the Extended state still gets security fixes, but nothing else, so it is a signal to schedule an upgrade rather than a place to stay.
containerd is usually installed by a Kubernetes distribution or a container platform, so check which version your nodes actually run (`containerd --version`) and which versions your Kubernetes release supports before you change it.
